Government and history majors at Gallaudet University are given high quality education in the classroom and stimulating and helpful experiences beyond the classroom. This enables them to pursue higher degrees and jobs in the public and private sector. Here are the experiences of several of our graduates:

  • Andrew Petajan, 1998.

In December 1998 I graduated from Gallaudet with a double major in government and business administration.I earned a Masters Degree in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. As an undergraduate, I was government tutor and an intern for Congressman Ron Kind. I also completed an internship at Landaas & Company, a financial service firm in Milwaukee. After graduate school, I worked as a quantitative analyst for Commercial Appraisal Service, Inc. In 2004 I left that company to become an economist at the Bureau of Labor Statistics in Washington D.C.
  • John Slone, 2007

I attended Gallaudet University because I wanted a liberal arts education. I majored in government and found the faculty to be well-trained scholars and teachers who were publishing and researching a variety of topics from democracy in Africa, to disability organizations in the European Union to immigration in America. Faculty were excellent guides to my own learning research and experiences. I feel they gave me an excellent foundation to be a good citizen-activist. I was able to intern in two different offices on Capitol Hill for members of Congress; it was exciting to see how democratic institutions function and hopefully how to indfluence them to usher in important changes in our society. And getting to live in Washington with all it has to offer was a wonderful bonus!

  • Jeffrey Peterson, 2007

Throughout my employment with the National Park Service at Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota my history background has definitely given me an advantage. As a park ranger I am required to guide groups of up to 40 people at a time on 1 and 1/2 hour tours through the 4th longest cave in the world and convey the importance of our park system. Familiarity with American History during the late 19th to early 20th Century has provided me with a much more appreciative perspective of the location and just how special our National and State forests, parks, preserves, and memorials are. It's been an amazing experience not only because of my own opportunity to increase my learning and understanding of the world, but also to actually be paid to show this to our numerous visitors and show them what an amazing place it is that we live in.
